Bash Mutumba is a 22-year-old Ugandan writer who has a passion for photography and digital media.
Where did your passion for photography come from?
My passion for photography started inadvertently as a child, when my dad bought me my first point-and-shoot film camera.
What would you say sets you apart from other photographers?
Even though I’m not that different when it comes to employment of the photography rules, I’m unique as an individual so it shows in my work.
As a versatile creative, if you were to choose one skill which one would you go for?
It would be a hard fight between writing and photography; because those are the two things I can never stop doing. Even when I’m resting, I end up doing one of the two.
What have been the highs and lows of your career so far?
My stint at Galaxy FM and being mentored by celebrity photographer Oscar Ntege.
What/who inspires your work?
Mother Nature.
Which one of your works is your favourite?
I find it hard to have a favourite, I’m emotionally attached to most of my photos.
What is the most important thing you consider when starting a project?
My client and what they have in mind, vis-à-vis what I have in mind.
Who are your favourite photographers and why them?
Annie Leibovitz and Oscar Ntege. Annie speaks through her photos and has unique techniques, and Oscar has revolutionised various genres in Uganda like wedding and portrait photography.
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
A smartphone.
Given the chance who in the world would you want to photograph?
Rihanna.
Describe a typical day in your life.
The time I wake up depends on the plans I have for the day. Giving thanks to God, cleaning up, checking my messages and then following the day’s plan.
What song is the soundtrack to your life?
Prayer.
What are you most fond of about being Ugandan?
I get to practice freedom and seize opportunities without fear.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Momma told me I should always trust God because he never fails.
How would you like to be remembered?
As the greatest, poetic writer and photographer from Uganda in my generation.
How can people get in touch with you or access your work?
Through my social media platforms since I share almost everything there.
