Olukayode Olowo is a 23-year-old Nigerian blogger from a family of five. I have a B.S.c in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos. I am a tech head and I love creative writing, I love to read African Literature, sci-fi/fantasy novels and poetry.
Where does your love for writing come from?
It always amazes me how seemingly random words can be strung together to make a masterpiece.
Who is your favourite writer/poet?
My favourite poet is Maya Angelou.
What else do you enjoy doing besides writing?
I’m a tech head so, whenever I’m not writing, I love to check out blog posts on the latest hacks in JavaScript from freecodecamp or catch up on articles written by awesome Nigerian programmers.
If you were to choose between biochem and being a writer, which one would it be?
Tough one, but I’ll always choose writing. This is because it offers me some form of peace that science doesn’t.
How did you get into blogging?
Blogging for me started because I had a lot of ideas in my head and anytime I went to people with my ideas they would say, “you should write this down instead of talking to me.” So, blogging offered me a platform to share my thoughts with the rest of the world.
What do you hope people will get from reading your work?
I want them to open their hearts to feeling. I want the words to become alive as they read them because really, words are powerful.
What is your writing process like?
I’m a procrastinator. Very bad habit but I’ve found a hack around it and that is by setting deadlines for myself. Most of my best work is done few hours before the deadline I set for myself. That way, I achieve my goals. So basically, I set a deadline, then let my thoughts marinate until the 11th hour, after which I write like crazy, usually just in time for the deadline.
Of all you have written, what is your favourite and why?
The very first thing I wrote was a poem. And it will always be my favourite. This is because, it made me realise that I could actually create.
What is your proudest achievement in life?
Graduating with a BSc in Biochemistry. It was no easy feat.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
“Have fun in everything you do”.
What advice would you give to new bloggers/writers?
Read! Read!! Read!!! All good writers are equally good readers.
What song would you say is the soundtrack to your life?
Pharrell William’s Happy. I chase happiness no matter what.
Describe a typical day in your life.
I have a 9-5 so it’s pretty boring during the day. My evenings/nights are when I get the most work done. I write for about 2-3 hours in the evenings. Then I catch up on my online courses, watch an episode or two of a tv series until about 2am after which I retire to bed.
How would you like to be remembered?
I want to be remembered as someone who never gave up no matter what.
What are you most proud of about being Nigerian?
This is a tough one. Nigerians are very hardworking. I love that about my country. They always strive to make something for themselves no matter the current situation.
