Meet Zimbabwean artist Real Shona

Real Shona is a Zimbabwean urban new age musician, songwriter and visionary. He is co-founder of Flamerz Entertainment along with Tha Dawg and Dr Saizer. Check out his latest EP, Chibaba Chembudzi.

Over the course of his career, Shona has been an instigator of various developments within the Urban New Age music. His musical career is marked by blending elements of Dancehall, Hip Hop and Afro music, as well as forging a smooth distinctive vocal and song writing style. Real Shona grew up on the streets of Bulawayo’s rapidly changing neighbourhoods of Tshabalala and Nkulumane, working in communities to co – exist with young local artists. That is where he was introduced to the culture of Dancehall and Hip-hop music crowds.

When it comes to music influences Shona remarks, “The Urban Grooves Movement gave birth to me (Chamhembe, MC Villa, Leonard Mapfumo, Roki, Stunner, Jnr Brown, Exq, Extra-large, Trevor Dongo among many others. And we have the likes of Ice Prince, Burna Boy, and Mr Eazi the list is endless.”

The young Zimbabwean wants to unify people through his music, “Especially the Ghetto youths. I want them to feel that anything is possible, as long as you believe in yourself, I want them to forget whatever pain or suffering they will be feeling whenever they listen to my Music.”

For someone new to his music, Shona recommends you start by listening to Taka Charger and Amai and then proceed to listen to the rest of his music, available from all digital platforms.

Not being able to go on stage and do what he loves is the thing that affected him the most during the pandemic. At least now some of the restrictions have eased.

The highlights of the artist’s career, “My journey has been the biggest highlight of my career , I’m learning a lot, meeting new people ,the experience is just sweet I don’t wanna lie even though sometimes it gets hard.

I have managed to open my Own recording studio called Tha Flamerz Entertainment with my business partners Tha Dawg and Dr Saizer. I got nominated Best Male at The ZimStars 2019 awards alongside the biggest artist in the country Asaph, and Tigonzi.”

His favourite artists and producers to work with, “My favourite artists and producers to work with are my Team at Tha Flamerz Entertainment because I feel like they understand me more than anyone and also Larynx from Certified Records.”

The artists Real Shona wants to work with in the future, “Locally, I would like to work with Poptain, Ishan,Nutty O, Garry Tight, Enzo Ishall and internationally Ice Prince. As for Producers I would love to work with Dj Tamuka, Oskid, Gangsta made it, Jamal, Cymplex Music and Levels.”

Working on my EP was one of the best experiences of my life , from coming up with the name, writing the songs, Studio session the vibe was just amazing I just wanted to make something to help relief the pain we have been through during the pandemic.

The advice he would give to his younger self is, “Believe in yourself always. Be patient because Great things take time and remain consistent, no matter how hard it gets never give upkeep working hard and remember no one owes you anything.”

The young visionary wants to be remembered as, “One of the most loved and influential brands to ever come up from Zimbabwe.”
