In Conversation with: Collins Nyamadzawo

Meet keen photographer and all round creative, Collins Nyamadzawo.

Where did your passion for photography come from?

I developed a passion for photography after my experience with the film industry. As a Production Assistant for a Film Production House in Harare, I had to take photos of the set and at times the cast, that’s when my love for photography grew.

What would you say sets you apart from other photographers out there?

I prefer working in areas that photographers have neglected and bringing out the beauty of certain places that is brought out at odd times.

Who inspires your work?

I don’t have any specific person who inspires my work, I am inspired by different techniques that different photographers use in their work.

Where is your favourite place to take photos from?

I prefer taking photos of the urban jungle, the way concrete interacts with the urban ecosystems in various times of the year, especially old neighbourhoods.

Of all the photographs, you have ever taken which one is your favourite?

Hillbrow By Night.

What is the most important thing you consider when taking a photograph?

Depending on the subject, for people, being comfortable and relaxed and being themselves, for landscapes, timing.

Who are your favourite photographers and why them?

Stephen Seagul – He is brilliant teacher who is passionate about what he does.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

My Camera.

Given the chance who in the world would you want to photograph?

Patience Musa.

Where in the world would be your dream place to go, and take photos?

Tokyo, Japan.

What are you most fond of about being Zimbabwean?

Being afforded a foundation to be able to adapt in any environment, being given a basic education that is second to none in the world.
