Ulethu is an Afro Pop/Afro Soul/House musician and a radio and TV presenter.
What/who do you treasure the most in life?
My relationship with God is the core of my existence, inspiration and happiness
How would your family and friends describe you?
Warm, energetic, straight shooter, hard headed and loving.
Where did your love for music come from?
My mum was the Head of radio 4 (late Lorraine Nobuhle Garwe) she travelled the world as she was a journalist so always brought home music and that’s how I was fed and fell in love with it.
Apart from music, what else do you enjoy doing?
Laughing, Talking, Writing, Running, Reading, Exploring Cooking, Dancing.
What do you hope people will take away from listening to your music?
Love, truth and freedom to feel.
Where do you get inspiration for your songs?
Life experiences, observations from others, Personal desires and sometimes just my imagination.
What have been the best and worst memories of being an artist?
Best: Great Collaborations with talented Zim producers.
Worst: when being a female artist got me mediocre professionalism because of my gender, therefore a lot of time wastage and unnecessarily slow progress.
Of all the songs you have done to date, which one is your favourite?
My latest single: Ingoma Yakho – on iTunes and YouTube now – also watch out for it on Channel O next month.
Where in the world do you wish to perform one day?
MTV music awards In Africa and America.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you so far?
Stay true to yourself, and if you have Jesus in you, nobody and nothing can take that away.
Describe a typical day in your life.
Early morning start (5am) go running, then work at Capitalk FM, usually end the day quietly with a glass of wine and a movie or a cup of rooibos tea depending on how I feel, hot shower, sometimes dinner with friends then sleep.
Where is your favourite place to perform?
Nowhere yet as I have been more of a recording artist but have enjoyed performing for the American embassy members a couple of times with a local band.
Who are your favourite artists and why?
Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, Brenda Fassie, to mention a few, for their representation of the strength, determination and style of the beauty, class and talent of a black woman.
Who has been your favourite artist to work with and why?
Reverb7 because of his great work ethic and skill in vocal arrangements, Peter Thulani Mutsemi because of his professionalism and passion for the art.
Which artists would you like to work with?
Oliver Mtukudzi and Takura.
What are the top songs in your playlist right now?
LaSauce “I Do” & Drake “Nice for What”
When are you happiest?
When I’ve just completed writing a good song.
If you could give up anything for a year what would it be and why?
Meat coz I think it would be easier than giving up sugar.
What are you most fond of about being Zimbabwean?
Our beautiful melanin skin and our common love for our country despite the difficulties.
How would you like to be remembered?
Through my music impacting the world: my strengths remaining dynamic vocals and beautiful lyrics.
What advice would you give to upcoming young artists?
Never give up of their dreams because that’s the only sure way to fail or follow the crowds.
