Meet Zimbabwean artist Darrel
Darrel Kuwana, popularly known as Darrel is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter. The young artist hails from the city of Mutare, in Zimbabwe. He declares, “I got into music via my friends at the age of 10, they were in the school jazz band and that’s how I grew to love it.” Get acquainted with his music by checking out his EP, A Mended Heart. You should also have a look at his collaboration with Kae Chaps, titled No Doubts.
Who are some of your music influences?
My music influences are, Davido, Wizkid, Jah Prayzah, Kizz Daniel, Drake and Justin Bieber.
How would you describe your style of music?
I haven’t started describing my music yet because I’m not ready to pick a box that my music should be put in. I’m still young and figuring it out so I don’t have one yet but watch this space.
How do you want people to feel when thy listen to your music?
I want people to feel the emotions I felt when I was writing the song as they listen to it.
For someone new to your music, which songs would yo recommend they start with?
These aren’t my favourite but because the fans chose them, I’d say Samantha and Ndipinde (if not, No Doubts). Although these songs won’t be speaking for the new material that’s coming soon.
When did you know that you wanted to pursue music professionally, how did your family react to this?
That was at the age of 18. Since in Africa it’s not always well received to pick that as a profession, it wasn’t an easy task to convince the family, but they eased into the idea quite well.
You released your first EP, A Mended Heart, in 2020, how was it working on it?
It was fun, I was able to grow and write in ways that I’ve never written before. It also helped realize what I need to work on as an individual.
Who have been your favourite collaborations so far and who would you like to work with in the future?
I don’t think I could pick, they all brought different experiences to the table. As for future colabos, one of if not all my idols but near future has to be Rema or Fireboy.
What is the soundtrack to your life?
Right now, it’s a French song called Amina by Locko ft Tayc.
What advice would you offer to your younger self?
Keep your head down and immerse yourself in the work. That’s the only way you can improve because getting better with each song is the key and goal.
What are the top 5 songs in your playlist right now?
- Amina by Locko feat. Tayc,
- Abo Mbvelo by Dali Wonga
- Finesse Pheelz and Buju
- Jo by Rema
- Playboy by Fireboy
