Zimbabwean choreographer- John Cole

John Cole is a multi award-winning Zimbabwean choreographer, a father of two, married to an amazing woman and one awesome dude with a flair for the dramatic among many things. I think πŸ˜‚ some would say mentally hilarious above and beyond what you see is what you get from me.

How did you get into dancing?

You Got Served and my best friend Leroy Moses. He was showing off and I joined the dance wave and today here I stand.

What’s your earliest memory of you dancing?

Learning how to windmill on grass in the outskirts of my hood in Sunningdale, damn those were fun times. Performing at GHS (Girls High School) 😌.

When did you decide to become a choreographer and how important has dance been in your life since?

It just happened to be honest the transition came natural thanks to my mentor Edric Godzongere for pushing me in that direction. Ever since it has become my livelihood and my source of income. Through dance I have managed to change the narrative in the industry that one can be influential, stand as a brand and still inspire the youth and create awareness.

What have been the highs and lows of your career so far?

Award-winning choreographer - John Cole

Highs: Performing with my sons, shaping an industry, winning awards, becoming the biggest dance brand in Zimbabwe, starting a musical journey and nailing it like it’s my first language, inspiring and making people happy, travelling the world with dance.

Lows: Getting treated like you don’t belong, usage of the race card and people calling you names on social media let’s just say negative motions can cause frustration at times.

Who are the rocks in your life?

My wife and my sons. The main reason I keep going every day.

What process do you go through when coming up with a dance routine?

Long story short let’s just say there is a method to my madness in choreography which I am happy, appreciative that it has grown on the people that support the John Cole brand. It’s about teamwork and so far, so good. The #dancewithjohncole movement is now a whole vibe. Sold out concerts and classes.

What have you been doing to keep yourself safe and entertained during the lockdown?

Oh man! I started my online classes and they have been a hit on social media πŸ€— I love y’all for supporting my hustle. Currently I am hosting an online talk show #LiveWithJohnCole where I interview creatives with impact in society. So far, I have interviewed Trevor Dongo, Lee Mchoney, Sharon Manatsa, Tafadzwa Mukaro, Valee Music, Tina Masawi, Virgo (SA) and the legend Willis Wataffi just to name a few.

Who have been your favourite people to work with?

Shoooo bro! Putting me on the spot anyhow πŸ˜‚ Cynthia Mare, Ammara Brown, Sharon Manatsa, Carl Joshua Ncube, Cindy Munyavi.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

Usher, Cassper, Boity and many others but it’s all in the hard work for the future. Zvobuda πŸ˜‚

What’s the soundtrack to your life?

Sands – Tigi I think the title is right πŸ˜‚ but that song tjo. However, if we are talking about any other music, I would prefer my own like skoro skoro, xhexhe and body abduktion. Dance to my own tune.

How would you like to be remembered?

The man who changed the world of dancing.
